| A dental filling is a treatment used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or otherwise damaged surfaces of the teeth. Resin-based composite is the same color as tooth, and the most commonly used material. The old silver amalgam filling is never used in our office because it is unattractive, contains 50% mercury, and frequently produces cracks in teeth. Only the most up to date materials are used at the Oak Park Dental Group. |
| A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that permanently covers the visible portion of a tooth above the gum line to restore its shape, size, strength, and to improve its appearance. Permanent crowns can be made from metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin, or porcelain. Recent technological breakthroughs have produced all-porcelain crowns with the reliability of older metal-containing crowns. All-porcelain crowns are more biocompatible, and look virtually real. For this reason the older metal-containing crowns are almost never used at the Oak Park Dental Group. |
| A bridge is used to permanently replace one or more missing teeth. A fixed bridge is made of porcelain, and is cemented permanently to the neighboring teeth or dental implants. Recent technological breakthroughs in porcelain materials have made it possible to eliminate the metal used in old-fashioned bridges, resulting in a real appearance and unmatched biocompatibility.
