Traveling with Braces or Invisalign? Make Sure Your Mouth Stays Healthy

Orthodontics Oak Park

Planning for a trip can always be a bit stressful, particularly if you have braces or Invisalign! That’s why we’ve made this must-have guide to help you prepare for your next big trip and keep your orthodontic device in great shape.

1. Pack an on-the-go orthodontics kit.

You’ll want to pack a small kit of necessities to keep your braces clean and in good condition. This should include dental floss, mouth rinse, wax, and, of course, your toothbrush! It is also a good idea to add a small rinse cup, a mirror, and pain medication just in case. With this little kit in your suitcase, you’ll be prepared for any possible circumstances that could arise while you’re away.

2. Buy a travel case.

If you want to keep your braces in good condition throughout your travels, you’ll need to have a good toothbrush! And if you want a clean, germ-free toothbrush, you’ll need to bring the appropriate travel case. Your travel case should not be too small, and it should have holes for drainage and ventilation. This will allow airflow so that the toothbrush doesn’t become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

3. Don’t forget your retainer case.

If you have Invisalign, this one is for you! One of the most common ways to lose your aligners is to set them down while you’re eating and then accidentally throw them away. In order to avoid losing your Invisalign while you’re away from home, be sure to bring your retainer case everywhere you go! This will save you a lot of hassle down the road.

4. Be mindful of your meals.

While we understand the temptation to indulge in the local cuisine while you’re traveling, be certain that these foods are not too sticky or crunchy. The last thing you want is to break a bracket or wire when you’re away from home. Therefore, if you’re not certain of what a particular dish entails, be sure to ask or order something else!

5. Print out our office information.

You’ve likely heard that, while you travel, you’re supposed to pack printed copies of your passport and health insurance. It is also a good idea to carry the contact information for your health professionals, including us here at Oak Park Dental Group! By keeping our office number at the ready, you can call us in case of any dental emergencies. We’ll let you know if we believe you should seek immediate treatment or if the issue can wait until you return.

6. Schedule an appointment with the dentist.

One of the best ways to prevent dental emergencies while you’re away is to schedule a quick appointment in our office before you leave. We’ll check to make sure your orthodontic device is in good condition, as well as your teeth and gums! This way, you can rest assured that you’ll be able to have a stress-free vacation.
